It has been almost four months since launching Catchall Creatives and I have already surpassed all the goals I set for my first year. I did not expect the level of support I've received up to this point and I'm so grateful! One of my goals for this year is to really dive into this artistic journey and figure out what my niches are. I'm still diving into a handful of mediums and I'm having an absolute blast.
For starters, my goal in finding my niches is to also find my artistic style, and I want that style to reflect in all my artwork. In this creative journey I've taken any opportunity I can to join in on those applicable free trainings that pop up cause your phone heard what you were talking about. I've been diving into the world of photography and there is so much free information out there, it's insane. So I've learned a ton, and one thing stood out to me that I want to incorporate in all my art. Finding your "style" - this is one of, if not the, most important thing you can do as an artist.
So let's talk about ~style~ shall we? Your style should reflect, well, you. Your essence, passion, purpose, etc. can naturally shine through your creativity without you even really trying. Some may already have a style and they don't even know it. For me, one exercise that I found helpful was to write down a list of ten words that describe who you are and what you love. This exercise came from a free photography training with Nicole Hill (check her out if you're interested in photography!). Making this list wasn't hard to write honestly - it was eye opening to write down my strengths and points of confidence. Great self-reflective moment for me lol
I hesitate to share my list because I don't want it to have an influence on your list - however, just to let you know there is no right or wrong here! Here's the list I came up with for myself:
Joyful
Creative
Loves animals
Christian
Whimsically minded
Empathetic
I love making others joyful
Inspires creativity
Easy going
Spontaneous
I thought of like five other things that I could add to this list, but here are the top ten that came to my mind! Looking at my art today, I can see parts of the list shine through in almost all of my pieces, and that makes me so happy. The goal is to have people look at your art and be like, "I know [fill in the blank] created that". Or (to tie it back to the blog title), "That's so [fill in the blank]". It's nice to have a niche, and imperative to have a style within your niche(s).
So two big questions come to mind when you are trying to figure out where you are in your art journey: 1) What is/are my niche/s? 2) What is my artistic style? This was a good starting place for me, and I didn't know right off the bat. I'm still continuing to experiment and figure out my niches. My style, however, is what I'm trying to stick with no matter what medium I use.
I feel like the creative journey never really stops for anyone, so cheers to the continued creative exploration in finding and evolving my style. As one of my points in my list above, I hope that my artistic style inspires you to be creative in your own way! I'd love to hear about your creative style and learn another perspective - comment here or email to share your story with me, with any questions, and/or if you just want to chat :)
